Diorama: HQ (Ordnance Liaison)

Time for another diorama - this is something I've been tinkering with for the last few weeks.  Fellow blogger Dai was kind enough to recently pop some models across the pond for me to paint up, and these are the results.  The ones I used here were two of the Imperial Guard Adviser models - Navy Liaison Officer and Master of Ordnance.  I wanted to do something a bit special for them, and with Captain Severus taking command of the company, this could be the perfect opportunity to model his new advisers.

In game terms, they're going to represent three members of my HQ Squad - the vox-caster, and the two advisers.  Because of Capt Severus' background I won't be purposely charging him into combat so the rules issues of having multiple models on one 60mm base will hopefully be avoided.  Worst comes to the worst I can use some loose Guardsmen as stand-ins for gaming purposes if opponents object.

But this is all about the model, not the game.  I decided not to convert the advisers themselves - they are really beautiful models, especially the Naval Liaison (I already used another one of these to make Capt Severus' model).  But to get some conversion in, I decided to convert a radioman.  Not a silly, vox-caster radio with a massive speaker on it.  A proper, Company HQ radio balanced on a rickety trestle table and covered with maps, code books and logs.

The radioman uses a few bits from Victoria Lamb's IG parts - these are basically Mordian parts, but they come as separate torsos, arms and heads which make converting a lot easier.  I decided to give him a field cap rather than the proper peaked cap, representing the way things get a little bit more lax on the front line.  I used Sentinel pilot legs to get him to sit at the table.

Thanks again to Dai for his generosity, this has been a real joy to get stuck in and paint!  And thanks to you chaps as well for coming over and having a look.  (And for your advice on painting faces - I tried out a few techniques.  I have a long way to go, but I'm getting there!)

  1. Nice one Col. - the two adviser models look odd by themselves, but in this setting look like a couple of 'Officer Types' having a pow wow on where to send the cannon fodder - great result!!

The skin tones are looking better than the last time - I think I said it before that Guard models tend to have nice faces to paint as they have lots of folds and such that lend themselves to raised highlights.

    1. Thanks mate. Yeah I wanted to put them together, it seemed like they should be looking at each other with a map near at hand. Individually they look as if they're staring into space.

That's the key to faces, is the models. Some of my worst flesh painting is on Catachan models, because apart from one or two grooves the arms are basically flat.

  2. Wot he sed.

Seriously kool, and I can see these hard working men propelling the good Captain Severus into a staff position, as long as he doesn't get them kilt first.

    1. Well that's the plan - no doubt sniggly Chaos types will try and kill them off by conspiring with the dice gods, just to mess up my fluff.

    1. Thanks Mordian, glad you like it - especially the composition because I spent a lot longer planning it than I normally do when I just get stuck in!
