Man Down - Classic IG Casualties

"What are all those men doing lying about over there?
Get them up and moving at once!"

"They're dead, Colonel."

"Ah, I see.  Belay that order!"
Ebay is usually a bad thing.  I go on the website, then after about half an hour, I've suddenly lost about £40.  But, to cheer me up, after a few days some nice models arrive - and these are nicer than most.

Classic Mordian Iron Guard casualty models!  I do like painting a few casualty models, so I can pop them down on the field to mark where my men are (inevitably) scythed down like wheat.  And these are particularly nice, because they're Mordians I haven't seen before, so I get to paint something a bit new.

I selfishly bought the entire lot and there aren't any on as I write this, but they do keep appearing from time to time.  I found these through an email alert, and they cost me about £10.

On another note, a few may remember my lament over the passing of Mordians into the history books as GW stopped making them.  Well, shock horror they are back on!  What's going on?  Pangs of conscience at Oberkommando der GW?  Who knows? ...

Working on the WW1 Russians and Germans as we speak, and hopefully the next update will cover that.

  1. Nice find. And yeah, good news about Mordians being back at GW.
Dead Mordians? Never! Mordians never die!
I have to say that these were actually released as Praetorians. But no one will blame the good Colonel for that oversight considering that he didn't know they were dead in the first place.
    Happy modelling :)

    1. Good news indeed, I would love to be a fly on the wall of the GW office when they made that decision.

I stand corrected, said the man in the orthapedic shoes. It did seem a bit paradoxical, dead Mordians...

  2. I love picking these up cheap because one casualty per heavy weapon squad frees up a more expensive crewman model to use in another squad.

    1. Ah! That's a brilliant idea, very practical, I'll be doing that. Thanks for the tip.

  3. Always good to find something you want on ebay.

Rather than a nice to have at a variable price...

    1. Must say I'm pleased to have GW supplying them at £20 a squad. Expensive, but better than £4 a model...

  4. Have you come across any cultist casualties during your searches? I'd really like some, but no-one makes them :(

    1. Unfortunately not, never seen any of them. Casualty models in general are not really very common with GW. Could these be made cultist-y with a suitable chaotic paintjob perhaps? Thanks for swinging by.

    2. You could get tallarn casualties which might work better as cultists, but I believe they are even rarer than these and just as sort after!

    3. Anything robed and in scale would suffice

  5. Nice find! Mordians or Praetorians though? I know that old army boxed set for the Praetorians had some casualty figs inside....

    1. Hi Dai, yep I think they're meant to be Praetorians (ironically, Praetorian Guard also being the name for the First Regiment of the Palladian Guard...) Ah, the days when you could get Praetorian Boxed Sets :)

  6. Yeah I remember when these were released in WD as Praetorian Casualties... wonder if I still have it. Good find sir, looking forward to seeing these painted up.

    1. Hmm around 215, roughly I think... I'll have a browse

    2. Think it might have been 217 - 219, the Big Toof River issue or the one before or after

    3. 222 was the Glazers Creek issue by the way (I found it for 99p shortly after recollecting Praetorians as I recognised the cover in a hobby store!) It mentions the Praetorian boxset available for 65 pounds! and it comes with 2 limited edition casualties. Big Toof River was covered in 218, I don't have that :(, but I believe Headologist is right and that is where the boxset is properly advertised.

    4. Think I gave you and Ollie my old copies on my last hobby sabbatical, it was defintiely in there somewhere...

  8. Got yourself a bargain there Colonel, regularly seen these go for 3-6 pounds each depending on the bidders of eBays mood! They are definitely Praetorians, they came in the limited edition boxset and I'm 99% sure you could get them in blister packs as well when the range was available. They obviously work perfectly as Mordians as well as they seem to have misplaced their helmets, tut tut.

    1. That's what I thought, I really couldn't afford them but for that price you can't say no. I have a few spare dress caps to add to them, maybe lying by their side but since they're the same, no-one will notice once they're painted up - hopefully.

    2. Yep you can't lose, you could sell them individually and probably double your money! When I need Praetorian helmets I just cut the heads of Vic Miniatures pith heads, I think caps would look good by their sides but not essential She does some of them too if you need some. The models are exactly the same so don't worry about it, they will look ace, have fun.
