Mordheim Battle Report

This lonely street became the scene of some vicious fighting today...
Those of you following my Mordheim series will know I've been putting together a warband for a few weeks now.  I was over at Coldsteel Dan's place recently and we managed to get a test game in!  Thanks to Mike for getting it all together and for all the terrain and organisation.  In the tradition of most of my batreps, I won't go in to all the nitty-gritty and stick to some general photos.

I will, however, say that we stuck to our formula of small games, lots of terrain, and loads of levels with gantries and planks to make it 3-D.  We extended this to 40K with the Battle of Tallax Slums last year, and it's always been the norm for Necromunda, but this really changes the game into a thrilling, back-and-forth, highly tactical and challenging experience.  With lots of people falling off buildings and so on.  So, without further ado:

(Oh, one last bit of ado - I have now decided to use the Reaper Miniatures vampire, but she wasn't quite ready.  So her son, the Vicomte de Fontenac, stood in for this test game)

Mike's captain led a stubborn defence in the streets which cost me most of my horde.
Rickety ladders?  Check.  Unstable gantries?  Check.  Bloodthirsty zombies?  Check.
We played a 'capture the buildings' scenario, with four objectives.  As you can see, it devolved into cuthroat streetfighting in and around these two buildings here.
The Vicomte's high movement and initiative made him deadly in close combat, dispatching four of Dan's men
One of Mike's longbowmen - they (and Dan's as well) dominated the field and I certainly
couldn't reach them because of my inability to climb.
The zombie horde worked quite well, until the vampire was slain and the wheels came off.
Lurking in the upstairs rooms, waiting for a victim...
Mike's gang put up a stubborn fight and were the eventual victors - despatching most of that
horde in close combat!
Dan had some very unlucky shooting and bore the brunt of the Vampire's attentions, but still did very well out of the post-battle cleanup with some characterful injuries and a good haul of gold.
These two ended up fighting for about four turns, with the youngblood eventually winning through.
There was a LOT of falling from gantries - in fact, that's how my vampire ultimately met his fate...
Dan's men approaching in the distance, while the vampire watches...
Some excellent miniatures and scenery there from Mike again.
And there you have it.  A bit rough and ready but hopefully easy to follow.  As you will have gleaned from the text, me and Dan took very hefty casualties when we ran into each other and both ended the game by bottling (although Dan held the required number of buildings at the game's nominal end and so was technically the winner).  Mike held the field with an almost-complete warband and a pile of dead zombies at his feet.  Well done!

What a cracking game Mordheim is - unpredictable, exciting, enjoyable, unpredictable ... did I mention the unpredictability of it all?  Curse you, fickle dice!

Thanks for reading,

Ed

  1. Great looking models and terrain. It seems Mordheim is in the air, some of the local lads are talking a mordheim league.

    1. Thanks, Col. Yes, I don't know whether it's just because I've been planning this game but I've noticed a few decent write-ups lurking around the blogosphere.

  2. Y'know, in 22 years or so, this is the one GW game I've never seen played. It looks like a real blast though!

    1. Me neither, until today! Suffice to say it was so simple I'd pretty much got it by turn 2, a really easy game to pick up. We busked quite a bit and came up with some rules on the hop which made it quite fun.

  3. I dig the Vicomte de Fontenac model, where is he from?

    1. Thanks; it's one of the old classic ones I picked up off Ebay for a few quid. The original model had a halberd, I just used a nail to make a rapier.

  4. Goodness that Mordheim terrain is lovely. I use the zombie horde aswell, its a hell of a tough thing to fight against. Im one of ColKillgores' "local lads" hopefully the gardens of morr will soon be vacated of their occupants to ravage the warm bodies yet again.

  5. It really is, terrain makes the day and this really was memorable. I picked it for flufftastic reasons but it actually turned out okay, taking out a couple of models before their numbers began to thin. In conjunction with the Vampire (who takes out all the characters) they can be pretty deadly.

  6. Nice. Love the scenery. Shame your dead people got killed.

    1. Haha - I did think during the ritual pre-battle taunting, where "I'm gonna kill you" text messages were being sent back and forth (interesting for the police if I were to mysteriously disappear), that I couldn't really die again.

  7. Lovely stuff on show here - that terrain!

Looks like a cracking good time was had by all (excepting the Zombies maybe)!

    1. Thanks Muppet (sorry for the slow reply). If ever there was proof that terrain makes the game, it was here!

  8. Good to see you got a game in!

Shame the vamp died so cheaply though. He should have been zipping about with unearthly speed, mesmerizing unwary mortals with his unholy gaze and sucking each dry in turn before they’d even had a chance to raise their blades.

(I have also never played this one – but it looks/sounds so fun!)

    1. Thanks Dai - to be fair he did do a lot of bowel-loosening charges across the board, leaping about the place and irrevocably perforating some of his foes, but perhaps not as many as I'd have liked. Gives his mum something to be cross about next time, I suppose.

  9. I'm thinking of having a game soon. What ruleset do you use? Coreheim? Warseer? Original?

    1. Hi Dan, we use the original rules (with a few house rules thrown in there). To be honest I haven't tried any of the others, what are they like? Keep me posted how your game goes! What warband do you use?

    2. My friends are using the wyrdwars rules. I'm not sure I like them. They feel like some has crow barred 8th ed wfb into Mordheim. The warbnds feel unbalanced because of it (warhounds in every list, halflings in the dwarf warband, orcs very under powered). I think my friends chose wyrdwars as they have a lot of new models, I'm more of an oldhammer player. I also think its lost a lot of the feel of Mordheim and is more like an 8th ed skirmish game.
Take a look at the warbands and rules, I'd love to know what your opinion is of it (and anyone elses).
