Rogue Trader Commander - and The Kindness of Strangers

Evening all!  I hate to start posts by apologising and pleading the Real Life defence, but things have been really busy at work so modelling has dropped behind a little bit.  Couple that with my recent rediscovery of Silent Hunter and Das Boot and it's a wonder I get any modelling done at all.  I usually get back from work at about 8pm, then an hour's gym/swim leaves me with about three hours per day to myself, so that's usually only about half an hour a day.

Nonetheless, there are a few projects going down the range at the moment - RJW Naval, WW2 Alternate History, and a few Imperial Guard tidbits.  I'm even hoping to get a game in next week when me and Headologist go back to our old childhood club for a reunion/game.

But my latest modelling project has a bit of backstory.  The model itself is another one of my junior officers, ready to take the place of the others who are killed in battle.  I got an email of one of my regular followers, Dai, from over at Lost, Damned and the Stunted, offering a swap.  A Rogue Trader Commander model?  With arms?  Yes please!  Later I came up with a selection of heavy weapons and we popped them in the post.  Apparently the US-UK postal route is downhill, because the commander turned up in about a week whereas my heavy weapons took nearly two.  But they arrived - and what a beautiful model!  I decided to save the arms for another model - if I put all my RT parts onto one model it would look a but out of place.  So I gave him a rather trendy plasma pistol (firing sideways), and a power fist*.

Painting, and of course fluff, will follow shortly!

There is, of course, a deeper theme here.  I've been a blogologist now since Dec 2011, and in that time I've come to appreciate that this is a very distinct little community.  Common interest amongst wargamers is nothing new, probably right back to the days when Prussian lieutenants in the mess would sit on a sofa, snacking on schnapps sandwiches and a stein of sauerkraut, swapping some scintillating strategies while smoking a cigarette.  But random acts of philanthropy?  I never would have thought it.  So thankyou to those of you over the year who've donated bitz to the cause, and I'll try and pay back that good karma by giving out if anyone requests a bit.

*Note to self - must invent a new word for power fist.  While writing some 40K fiction the other week, I tried to describe a Guardsman smashing a Gretchin with said weapon and could not get the phrase 'gave him a power fisting' out my head for several hours.  Not much was written that day.

  1. POWER-FISTING! That's a keeper but certainly not appropriate for the general public. What about energized pugil mitt or thunder glove? Digits of death? I don't know, can't wait to see him painted and hear the fluff.

  2. Nice! That's one of my favorite old-school guard minis of all time. The addition of the new Cadian plastics works well!

    Cool stuff, man!

    1. Chris: You're right - I didn't want to write myself out of the 10-16 market! Energised Pugil-mitt! Brilliant!

Mordian7th: Cheers, it is a lovely model - which was sclupted before I was born, interestingly. The plastics do fit nicely, you're right. Pics to follow shortly ...

  3. Thunder Glove.

    "Thunder, thunder, thunder glove, Hhhhoooooooooooooooooooo"

Weird thoughts aside, the RTB Officer is fabulous, if I thought Dai had such treasures hidden under his Raven Guard I'd have gotten to him earlier. My one query would be; are you going to file the NCO's rank badges off of the officer's energized pugil mitt ?

  4. Nice! He's going to kick arse. Love the side held plasma pistol too, he'll now need a gold chain, kickin' trainers and a Cadillac Escalade as his ride to go with it! *laughing*

    1. Thanks for stopping by guys!

@Zzzzzz: Aha - you eagle-eyed reader, you! Fortunately, chevrons like that are not badges of rank in the Palladian Guard, they're qualification/proficiency badges, generally worn on the equipment itself like this. They vary between one and four stripes (the skull meaning its a weapon qualification). For the badges of rank, look at 'Shoulder Fluff' and 'Uniforms and Background' - they're in the January 2012 section at the bottom.

@Dai: Thanks! There will be a lot of bling on the breastplate anyway, and the shades of course!

  6. For a RT era miniatures, those commanders are really cool! I stopped by your blog on the weekend but couldn't type because I was crying from laughing about power fisting. It isn't that it is immensely funny, its just the thought of having the phrase nestled in the middle of your gritty grim dark fluff!

    1. Cheers guys

@Gordon: Thanks! I tried to make it fairly simple so it didn't stand out too much - I didnt want to distract too much from that lovely model!

@Col Ackland: It didn't seem appropriate to leave it in - no pun intended.
