Prepare for Battle!

UPDATE:  Thanks for reading and commenting ... the battle's now been fought so anyone who wants to find out how they fared, read the Battle Report here!

Well, the loyal staff officers behind the scenes at Second Battalion HQ have been slaving away, cooking up an army list for an upcoming game with my old adversary Headologist next week.  We're strictly limiting our extensive house rules for this game to give 6th Edition a fair trial.  Anyway, the list:

1/7 (Pioneer) Company, Second Battalion The Life-Guards, First Regiment The Praetorian Guard

Company Command Squad - 227pts
  • Bolt Pistol and Melta Bombs for Commander
  • Regimental Standard
  • Master of Ordnance
  • Bodyguard
  • Vox Caster
  • Krak Grenades
  • Regimental Standard
  • Lord Commissar, with Power Weapon and Carapace Armour
Ratling Squad - 50pts
  • 5 Ratlings

  • Bolt Pistol and Melta Bombs for Commander
  • Vox Caster
  • Krak Grenades
  • Commissar
2x Infantry Squads - 75pts
  • Melta Bombs for Sergeant
  • Vox Caster
  • Krak Grenades
  • Heavy Bolter
  • 3 Lascannons
  • Bolt Pistol and Melta Bombs for Commander
  • Vox Caster
  • Krak Grenades
  • Commissar
2x Infantry Squads - 75pts
  • Melta Bombs for Sergeant
  • Vox Caster
  • Krak Grenades
  • Heavy Bolter
Veteran Squad - 85pts
  • 8 Veterans and Sergeant
  • Bolt Pistol and Plasma Pistol for Sergeant
  • Meltagun
  • Heavy Bolter
Heavy Mortars - 150pts
  • 3 Heavy Mortars
  • 3 Earthshakers
  • Extra Armour
  • Extra Armour
TOTAL: 1496pts

That should give my foe something to think about.  I've deliberately skimped on the tanks just to give my Earthshakers their first combat outing, so it will probably be a sit-and-shoot approach.  Also the Hydra's going to be on its first mission although I'm not expecting any flyers.  We shall see ... let me know what you think!

  1. Mate, sincerely love how you linked all those units to their previous entries. Very cool.

Looks like this force will be fin to play with, protect that lone Hydra though!

    Good luck!

  2. Good luck with this!

I think if I invest in anything new it might just be some stand-alone towed (non-)artillery...

  3. Sorry - that should read:

    "(non-)towed artillery"

  4. Just wait a few weeks and you can use the Forgeworld rules for towed artillery pieces!

  5. @Dai: Thanks - I was trawling through for some pics of the artillery pieces and decided to link back to some of my retro posts. You're right, the lone tank will probably end up attracting a lot of fire though...

@Drax: Got to love the Earthshakers! They were very expensive but worth the investment I think. When I get the time I want to do a big diorama like the FW Imperial Armour book....

@Arianna: Ooooh [emerges from cave, removes cotton wool from ears] new rules? What is this new devilry you speak of? Sounds good though, new stuff for Guard can never hurt.

  6. Looks to be a nasty list - love the emphasis on artillery! I'm a big fan of the weapon emplacement style artillery as well - I often use a Medusa emplacement in my games.

...On of my favorite things about them is the little overlooked rule that if they start the game in reserve, they may deep strike! I really need to get around to modeling some parachutes for it. :)

  8. Ehm....the Life Guards ?! ;)

    Im looking up forward !

  9. @Mordian: Parachute-deployed emplacements?! That sounds like a decent modelling challenge, I like the sound of that. My next army will be the 8th Battalion (an Air Assault force) and these sound like the perfect additions to that. Thanks for the heads-up!

@Gordon: Thanks, my dear fellow, hopefully it will live up to the hype on the battlefield! When I hear the name 'Governor's Life-Guards' it does make me think of a sort of 40K Baywatch.
