Liebster Award - and Some News

Another round of Liebster Awards have been handed out, which means general good-natured mutual congratulation and appreciation of other people's blogs must go around!  I'm also using this post to announce a bit of a change of pace at Palladian Guard for the next few months.

I was fortunate enough to receive three nominations (so far), from Liam at Frothing Muppet's Land of Miniatures, my good friend Kieran at DYHAF, and Marshal Argos' 313 Rgt - cracking blogs which I genuinely look forward to reading.

The idea is to spread the word on smaller blogs, getting people clicking and looking at the ones that are still struggling to break out.  To that end, I won't re-nominate either of my very (very) worthy nominators and focus on smaller, newer blogs I enjoy.  Without further ado, the rules!

1.  Copy and paste the award on your blog linking it to the blogger who has given it you.
2.  Pass the award to your top 11 blogs with less than 200 followers by leaving a comment on one of their posts to notify them that they have won the award and listing them on your own blog.
3.  Sit back and bask in the warm fuzzy feeling that comes with knowing you have made someone's day!
4.  There is no obligation to pass this onto someone else but its nice if you take the time to do so.

Truths About Me
  • I speak Russian.
  • I love silent films.
  • I can unashamedly and truthfully say I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of military insignia for almost every country (going so far as to write a paper about how the changes in uniforms are bellwethers for deeper changes in a country).
  • I love Gilbert & Sulivan - my one greatest regret is turning down a chance to play the Major-General.
  • I've travelled to Russia, Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, the UAE, Pakistan and Afghanistan.  Still not done the US yet.
  • I play the piano enthusiastically.
  • The most famous person I've met is David Cameron - I had to make him a tea, and he didn't even drink it.
  • I hate red wine.
  • 'Colonel Scipio' is the name of my first Imperial Guard commander, who has now been promoted to regimental command.
11 Liebster Nominees
  • Why did you start blogging?  Initially it was to codify my wargaming - to give it structure, to let me write about it, and to see my pictures on the world wide web.  (No false humility) I never expected it to achieve this modest success.
  • If I could change one thing about the hobby, what would it be?  Probably to make it more accessible to all, cost wise.
  • What is best in life?  Work.  I really love it.  And rolling double sixes!  Sounds obvious, but it really does give you an incredible tingly feeling!
  • Do you want to live forever?  Not really - seems like it would get boring.  People waste their lives as it is, and we only get seventy years.  Imagine how little people would care if we lived forever.
  • Fame or fortune?  Both as bad as each other - I suppose a fortune is easier to give away.
  • What mini are you most proud of having painted?  My U-boat.

  • How do you deal with burnout?  Usually, I burn out because I'm busy, so that means I'm too busy to deal with it either.  I usually get back in to the hobby because I imagine an expectant blogging crowd...
  • Why is a raven like a writing desk?  Both made of carbon.
  • Star Wars, or Star Trek?  Neither.  Sorry, just never been in to sci-fi!  (Except written stuff)
  • If you could only buy from one miniature company, what would it be?  Too hard!  Perry?  Just because they have a great range...
  • Favourite takeaway?  Dominos.  I'd love to be able to say something more interesting!
Sad News Time - tissues at the ready

Amongst all the general good humour this seems as good a time as any to break some news I've been putting off for a long time.  It looks as if I'm going to be slowing the pace of my blogging right down for the foreseeable future.

I started this blog in 2011, when I just started in a fairly cushy job with tonnes of free time, and I've really enjoyed the three years of blogging.  I've certainly got the most out of the hobby in these last few years, and for that I'm grateful.  But the pace of life has stepped up about three gears with me heading on a pretty life-changing career course, and that means that certainly all modelling will have to stop - if I pass all my courses, for at least the next twelve months.

I don't want this to be too melodramatic.  I'll certainly be popping on the blogosphere and keeping in touch with my good friends, I have several good posts already written which I'll continue to drip feed, and on my occasional weekends off I'll be getting back to the club for a game now and again.  But my established 'one post a week' is now likely to be 'one a fortnight', or even once a month.

If I emerge out the other side of this self-imposed tunnel of hurt, I'll look forward to stepping back up.  But for the next few months at least, I'll be restricted to the occasional comment here and there.  So not goodbye - just a bit of a change of pace while I readjust to this new life I volunteered for!

To show I'm not a spoilsport, next week I'll have up a Battle Report from earlier in the month featuring Ollie's Storm Wolves.  Thank you, as always, for reading and commenting.  You are all far too good for me.

Thanks,

Ed

  1. Some excellent answers - I've learned two new things lol. Some excellent blogs nominated there as well. That's rather sad news indeed, although I've obviously been aware of this it's still rather saddening to see in print. I'm sure you'll still manage to post more than me... Well we might not get as many games in for a while but it will certainly be worth it sir

    1. Sorry for the delayed reply - yes, it was very depressing to write it but at least I still have access to the internet, so I can stay in touch and read everyone's blogs.

  3. Thank you mate.

Very interesting answers indeed. Gilbert and Sullivan? I was almost in Pirates of Penzance in my later teens...

Sad news though Ed. But, I'll still be here when you get back. No rush. None whatsoever. Might be some pressure to post though in some sort of cheeky fashion in the meantime. :P

    1. Ah yes, one of my favourites! I'm consoling myself next weekend with a trip to see the Mikado with colleagues.

It won't be too long, and I'll still be poking around, reading up on what you're all up to!

    1. It's catching on - the Internet is going to be big. Haha, yes - whatever windswept, sunblasted corner of the globe I end up on I'll still be able to check up on what goes on in the Land of Miniatures...

  5. Good luck Col Scipio.

Cheers for the nomination. And you'll have to visit the pain-o (as my wife plays it) next time you're here.

    1. How did I miss the pain-o last time? We will have a belter of a game once I'm out the other side, I'm sure.

    2. We spent more or less the whole time in the garage. The pain-o is in the living room.

  6. Some great answers, there, Ed! I love the reference to making David Cameron a cup of tea! It's a shame we won't be able to enjoy your great blogging for a while - but on the plus side, the course you're heading down sounds great. Very, very best of luck with that, Sir, and rest assured that we'll be here when you drop back to join us!

    1. Thanks very much for the kind words, as ever Drax. G&S seems to be a popular wargamer's choice - I can dream of a big trip to the theatre with us all one day!
